World class act

Former NTUC Income Chief Executive, Tan Kin Lian, has spoken up to give his two cents about the world class transport system in Singapore (See Straits Times article). Apparently his view and the views of many other Singaporeans are similar - that Singapore still has long way to go before the transport system can be considered world class.

The common complaints are about congested roads, higher Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges, crowded trains and buses as well as unacceptably long commuting times. Tan Kin Lian offers some suggestion to improve service now:

1. Increase frequency of trains
2. Have more feeder buses (or operate trams)
3. Have more express buses
4. Improve taxi service (encourage telephone booking)
5. Rationalisation (re-organise the operators)
6. Regulation (a more proactive approach)
