I scream for ice cream!

I had Chocolate Parfait ice cream without even knowing that today was National Ice Cream Day in the United States of America. Apparently July is National Ice Cream Month, as decreed by President Ronald Reagan and the third Sunday of every July to be National Ice Cream Day. For your information, Americans consume about 1.6 billion gallons of the cold treat every year.

Yet the reason I consumed ice cream was most probably due to the hot weather in recent days and the need to cool off. It is always great pleasure eat the sweet delight and each bite brings a certain childhood joy.

It is said that ice cream originated during the time of Charles I of England, who hosted a sumptous state banquet for many of his friends and family. The meal, consisted of many delicacies of the day and the King's french chef, DeMirco, had concocted a new dish that was cold and resembled fresh-fallen snow except much creamier and sweeter than any other after-dinner dessert. The guests were delighted, and Charles summoned the cook and asked him not to divulge the recipe for his frozen cream. The King wanted the delicacy to be served only at the Royal table and offered the cook 500 pounds a year to keep it that way. Sometime later, however, Charles fell into disfavour with his people and was beheaded in 1649. But by that time, the secret of the frozen cream remained a secret no more, as the cook did not keep his promise.

Just for fun, find out what your personality is from your favourite ice cream flavour (based on a study conducted by Dr. Alan R. Hirsch (M.D.) Neurological Director of the Smell & Taste treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago) here.
