I was listening to the Gold Breakfast Show 90.5FM on the radio when a listener aired his views about escalator safety. Apparently some parents had felt that escalators were not safe and children could get hurt on them.
DJ Hamish was suggesting what more could be done; perhaps putting up more signs? However the listener puts it aptly, "How more idiot-proof can be an escalator be? You just need to put your feet on the step and it brings you up or down.
Parents should just hold on to their kids when on the escalators and stop blaming everyone else when there is trouble. Being a parent myself, I would tell my kids off if they start playing on the escalators or start running off all over the place."
Parents these days should not shirk off their responsibility and should look out for their kids, instead of letting them roam freely, then begin to blame others when things turn out bad.
Perhaps we do not need more signs -- signs that go to the extent of detailing step by step of what to do -- what we really need is a little more common sense or situational awareness to look out for ourselves and others. If you play with fire, then prepare to get hurt.
