888

The number 8 is considered a lucky number for the Chinese and the date 08.08.08 (8 August 2008) is indeed an auspicious day as it marks the start of 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, People's Republic of China.

The Olympic games were awarded to Beijing after an exhaustive ballot of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 13, 2001. The official logo of the games, titled Dancing Beijing, features a stylised calligraphic character 京 meaning capital, referencing the host city.

The Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games are the 5 Fuwa (福娃) which draw their color and inspiration from the 5 Olympic Rings and designed to express the playful qualities of 5 little children who form an intimate circle of friends. They also embody the natural characteristics of 4 of China's most popular animals -- the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow -- and the Olympic Flame.

Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name -- a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei (贝贝) is the Fish, Jingjing (晶晶) is the Panda, Huanhuan (欢欢) is the Olympic Flame, Yingying (迎迎) is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini (泥妮) is the Swallow. When you put their names together, Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni (北京欢迎你) means "Beijing Welcomes You"!

The Olympic slogan, One World, One Dream (同一个世界,同一个梦想) calls upon the world to unite in the Olympic spirit.
