My friend was in a hurry to pick up an old man whom she describes as being pitiful. The old man was plagued with weak knees that pained so greatly that he could only walk short distances with his hands clutching his knees. This man resorted to taking strong painkillers every day and became very introverted. My friend was off to bring him to meet their group of mutual friends.
Apparently when this man was much younger, he already knew of his knee condition. The doctor strongly advised him to go for an operation as he also suffered from the thinning of his blood. However, going for the operation would mean he would have to take at least 2 months of medical leave for recovery. Being the conscientious worker that he is and knowing that his boss was already displeased that he had already taken quite a couple of days for his medical appointments, he decided to postpone the operation.
He delayed treatment for as long as he could till one day he ended up in hospital. Again the doctor warned him to go for the operation as soon as possible, if not, once his blood became too thin it would be pointless to operate as the wound would not be able to heal. It was a busy period during that time, so putting the company's interests first, he endured the pain.
One of the days the pain was so bad he had to take medical leave and before long he received an SMS from his boss. The message told him not to report for work any more. He was devastated. All the sacrifices for the company came to naught.
Once he got over the trauma, he decided it was time for the long awaited operation. However, this time the doctor informed him that it was already too late. His blood had become so thin that any operation would put his life in danger. So in the end, the man was out of a job and left to live with the pain in his knees.
After hearing this tragic but true tale, I wonder if it is really worth to put work above your own health?
