I've got friends who have asked me if I would like to help out in overseas volunteering projects but usually my time would have already been committed to some community work here in Singapore. Some are even not aware that there are needy folk in Singapore that require our attention. If help is needed in here, shouldn't we help those within our community first?
Most Multi-National Companies (MNCs) have corporate missions and obligations to help develop the local community that the branch is in because it makes sense to help the community that the business is in, to in turn help the business grow. If one actually bothers, there are a lot of community projects and volunteering opportunities here in Singapore.
It is good to extend our help to our neighbours in the region, especially to some of the poorer nations like Cambodia but perhaps we too can focus some energy helping the needy in Singapore as well. Below is a video entitled Nation Builders that shows how some old folk here in Singapore end up collecting cardboards and aluminium cans for a living.
I've worked with the elderly and sometimes just a little companionship would make their day. Apart from the elderly, there are also other groups that need attention as well.
