Fireflies in Kota Tinggi

I met my Malaysian friend and a few others across the Causeway in Johor Bahru for an exciting day ahead. The group of us had contemplated of meeting up and my Malaysian friend had made interesting plans to do something different.

We drove up to Kota Tinggi, which is one of the closest places from Johor Bahru (only about 40 km away or 40 min by car). The first impression someone would get from coming into Kota Tinggi is the view of this traditionally looking town blended in the modern setting of the 21st century. Kota Tinggi is one of the fast growing towns in Johor and is very popular with tourists.

We had nice succulent seafood at a kelong. (Malay word for fishing outpost. The main structure is composed entirely from wooden posts driven some 20 feet into the seabed.) After the palatable lunch, we headed off for a few rounds of Kart racing at the Permas Karting Circuit. karting is a variant of open-wheeler motor sport with simple, small four-wheeled vehicles called karts, go-karts, or gearbox/shifter karts depending on the design. By definition a kart must have no suspension (relying on chassis flex), and no differential (solid back axle). They are usually raced on scaled-down tracks, but are sometimes driven as entertainment or as a hobby by non-professionals.

It was lots of adrenaline fun as you could feel the rush of speed by being so close to the ground. Yet the highlight of the day or should I say night was just beginning. It was late evening as we cooled off from all the hot and intense racing and went on a river cruise with a twist. The cruise along the moonlit river was certainly a memorable one as there were numerous fireflies in the foliage along the river. The glowing of fireflies in the dark was definitely more spectacular than any Orchard Road Christmas light up (which incidentally was to be soon).

I knew I could trust my friend to think up of such excellent plans for the day and it would be a day we all would not forget.
