Happy 40th Birthday, Singapore!

It has been 40 years since our nation declared independence and we have evolved from a little known fishing village to a unique colourful city bustling with activity.

Back then, the little island of Singapore was hardly even heard of and many were willing to write us off as no more than a speck on the world map; no more than an exotic destination. However, great leadership and vision propelled us forward and we are now one of the leading nations in Asia that cannot be ignored.

Although Singapore has achieved much over the last 40 years, we must be prepared to do better in an ever-evolving world. Just as Prime Minister Lee mentioned in his National Day Message, we must remake our city, so that it is vibrant, cosmopolitan and throbbing with energy, with our own distinctive X-factor that makes us stand out from other cities.

Yet we must not lose sight of our fundamentals and heritage that distinctly defines us as Singaporeans. We must do more to preserve our unique blend of cultures as well as identify areas that make us proud to be Singaporeans.

On this day of national celebration, let us get into the party mood and enjoy the spectacular fireworks that would light up our skies tonight. I wish all Singaporeans near and far a Happy National Day!
