Inaugural Idol

The results are out. 3 million SMS votes later and Taufik Batisah was crowned the champion in the inaugural Singapore Idol. In the end, Singaporeans voted for an idol with the better vocal talent; an indication that quality prevailed. Not to say that runner up Sylvester Sim was a lousy singer, in fact it is just that he is more suited to sing Chinese songs.

Those who have followed the entire Singapore Idol saga would agree that the competition has been like a roller-coaster ride filled with ups and downs. Some were skeptical that if the true singing talents can make it to the finals given the media harping on the personal lives of the contestants. I have already summed up my thoughts in Sensational Performance.

I had tuned in to the finals of the Singapore Idol which was held in the National Stadium and was pleasantly surprised to see the warm enthusiasm from sell-out crowd circulating the entire arena. Crudely put, the entire event is an entertainment gimmick to make profit but I guess voting for a Singapore Idol invoked a certain national pride, and the excitement of playing a part in selecting a national celebrity. When the host Gurmit Singh finally blurted out the winner, I was shocked to hear sudden cheers reverberating from the neighbouring blocks of flats. Like me, many had also followed the event from their television sets.

What does it take to be an idol? The whole package of talent, effort and presentation and more importantly, to win the support of fans.
