Please spare the schoolchildren

The school holidays have just ended. For some, there wasn't any school holidays to begin with -- many students went back to schools for various activities or had other programs planned for them. Sometimes it makes you wonder, who is busier, the children or the parents?

Nonetheless it is back to school, and a certain technical glitch (who knows?) on the MRT caused the trains to be delayed. Train after train which came by after long intervals of almost 10 minutes were packed with crowds trying to make it work and to school. As if the heavy-heart feeling of going back to school wasn't enough, I could see the distressed looks on several students' faces as they watched helplessly on the platforms, wondering how ever are they going to get to school on time.

Some of these students in their school uniforms frantically whisked out their mobile phones seemingly to SMS their friends to inform them of their predicament. There was a little girl wearing a pinafore that was almost in tears as she contemplated whether to bash through the crowds as the train doors open - but alas, the trains were so full that the train doors could burst.

I checked for the news but MRT doesn't reports any lapses in their service, so I wonder how then would those poor students explain their late arrival? I arrived at work later than usual by almost 30 minutes but fortunately I have a habit of being early. The school discipline master, however, who has no way to verify if it is a case of the students' tardiness or failure in the public transport, may just black mark or punish the poor students.

These are the future generation of Singapore and anyone with children should be able to understand?
