Give and you shall receive

A colleague had lent me a book entitled, The Go-Giver: A Little Story about a Powerful Business Idea by Bob Burg and John David Mann. It is a fictitious story about a young salesman working hard to make it big and in his desperation to meet an impending quota, finds himself being introduced to a successful guru who shares with him the five laws of stratospheric success -

1. The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

2. The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.

3. The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first.

4. The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.

5. The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

It reminds me of a phrase from the Bible (Luke 6:38), Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Indeed many of us expect returns when we give something and the concept of offering something (either goods or services) for free will get you those cynical you-can't-be-for-real kind of stares. In the modern context, many people expect to get paid (in money) for their goods or services rendered, even for knowledge or advice, many who call themselves consultants charge exorbitant fees for this service, so much so that many begin to count the best way to maximise their returns. Many people forsake simple acts like spending time with friends and family as these are acts that do not generate monetary returns. In giving, it is more than just an investment that reaps monetary returns, it is about giving to the society and the people around you.
