Faith

What is faith? The dictionary defines it as belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion. And religion is defined as a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

A close friend asked me if one could live without faith. Faith gives hope and hope gives direction as I have mentioned in an earlier blog entry. Yet it also depends on how one lives the faith.

In the Tenth Commandment of Statecraft by former American President Richard Nixon,“Never lose faith. In just cause faith can move mountains. Faith without strength is futile, but strength without faith sterile.”

One needs strength to live out one's faith. When you put your heart in believing something right, you will find the strength to persevere. And if your heart strays, then all is lost. Similarly, being resilient and strong in surviving but living without a cause or faith is like living without direction. It is like going through existence without trying to understand what it's all about.
