I just went for a leisure dive with friends in Pulau Tioman over the weekend. Tioman Island is a small island, about 39 km long and 12 km wide, located off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Pahang. The densely forested island is still sparsely inhabited, but is surrounded by numerous white coral, making it a haven for scuba divers from around the region. Tioman is mainly famous for tourism.
According to legend, Tioman Island is the resting place of a beautiful dragon princess. Whilst flying from China to visit her prince in Singapore, this beautiful maiden stopped to seek solace in the crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea. Enraptured by the charms of the place, she decided to discontinue her journey. By taking the form of an island, she pledged to offer shelter and comfort to passing travellers.
Scuba (acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) diving is used to describe the use of breathing apparatus to stay underwater for periods of time greater than the average individual can breath-hold. The dive in Tioman was simply awesome and the underwater view of the corals and marine life was just breathtaking and I would recommend to anyone who loves diving. It is no wonder why in the 1970s Time magazine selected Tioman as one of the world’s most beautiful islands.
