World of Friends

The world really feels like a smaller place and I think I found the reason why.

Last night my primary school friend and I decided to celebrate another fellow ex-classmate's belated birthday. We wanted to make it special for her because she had revealed to us that her previous birthdays were just a simple affair. Since it's the first time we were celebrating with her, despite our many years of friendship, we decided to get her out for a nice dinner and asking a few more mutual friends along to make it a little cosier.

We gathered after work for the meal and my friend had brought along 2 of her colleagues. Apparently they had casually asked my friend out for dinner and my friend suggested for them to join us. So I made new friends over the meal as the birthday girl was pouring out her grievances at work.

It was still early after the meal and the conversation was great, so we decided to chill out at a nearby al fresco. When we got there, another of our primary school ex-classmate called to say he was around the corner and could join us. So he came along with 2 of his ex-university mates who was hanging out with. So the group of us sat for drinks and more conversation.

Who had known that my friend's ex-university mates were supposed to meet their colleagues and they too joined into the group. By then, I think the group had amassed to about 20. What started out as a birthday celebration turned out to be almost like Friendster gathering except that it wasn't online!

The birthday girl had thoroughly enjoyed herself and it was simply amazing how a simple gathering had turned into a massive party with people from all over the place. The world is indeed a smaller place because of the people we know and as how my friend puts it: everyone in this world is related by a maximum of 6 links.
