Labour Day in Singapore is celebrated on May 1 and it is a public holiday on the following Monday because it falls on a Sunday. The day recognises the contribution of working people towards society but much more than that, it is also an opportunity to take a break in more ways than one.
Employees should be glad for the official off day and even bosses should make good use of this time to relax. After all, in some ways, Labour Day serves as a reminder that humans need rest unlike machinery. Sometimes people get so caught up in work that they almost become machines and begin to lose track of their being.
There is no end to work and even if you thought you have completed something, something else just crops up. Especially in profit driven corporations, more work generally means more money and more money is better. Yet while work is part and parcel of our human life, there is more than just work that justifies our existence.
There is nothing wrong with being a workaholic per se but if being a workaholic means neglecting your health or those you care around you, then perhaps this should be the time to rethink your priorities in life. The advice of the counter-productivity of falling ill is probably heard very often but just how many people actually take it seriously.
So if you work, give yourself a pat on your back, reward yourself the break and enjoy this time with loved ones. Happy Labour Day!
