Happy Chinese New Year!

Tomorrow marks the first day of spring to the Chinese people and Chinese New Year is thus translated as the spring festival. Chinese New Year or also Lunar New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later.

The celebrations begin when a reunion dinner is held on New Year's Eve where members of the family get together for a sumptuous feast. The first day of the New Year is usually spent with the family and tradition of giving out lucky red packets containing money to unmarried members by those who are married brings great joy to children. Red packets are also given to unmarried relatives and guests during visiting which goes on for 15 days of festivities.

There are many traditions that the Chinese observe during this period for good luck and prosperity throughout the year but perhaps the most meaningful is when families would try to gather for the reunion dinner and reinforce the bonds that make them family.

Here's wishing all Chinese a prosperous and happy new year ahead!
