Waif Wife

An Indian ex-classmate once confessed to me that he would probably marry a Chinese because he claims that Indian wives put on a lot of weight after marriage. However, that was long ago and perhaps just an old wives' tale. In this current society it seems that all females, even married women desire to be slim.

The idea of slim is beautiful is perpetuated by various modes of mass media; almost everywhere on television, magazines and posters, there are images of models with thin body frames. The slimming industry is burgeoning with slimming cum beauty centres, pills and miracle devices that claim to help you lose weight. Any hint of a method to shed pounds and droves of people rush in for that glimmer of hope; spas and massages, special dietary foods and what knows what next.

It was not like this generations ago. During the Tang Dynasty in China, a rotund figure was a symbol of wealth and health and even the Emperor's favourite wife was plump. The general perception of beauty changes with time.

Apparently all girls just want to be beautiful. Why not? After all, beauty can indeed attract suitors. However, the news is filled with stories of people who go overboard and develop eating disorders and other health ailments. It seems as though no girl would ever think she is slim enough or beautiful enough as my female friends have confessed; almost like a neverending vicious cycle.

If beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder, there will be people who would think you are beautiful just as it is.
