Last night's episode of the local documentary Get Rea! was about blogging and had featured the Xiaxue blog that I had mentioned in my earlier entry Singaporean blogger. The host Diana Ser had discussed the joys and pitfalls of blogging with the blog author Wendy, as well as other local bloggers. Wendy talked about her blog and how she had progressed to be slightly more conscious of her large reading audience and avoided discussing personal matters. She admitted that the blog may be abused as tool to cause emotional hurt and that is where bloggers should take social responsibility.
Another blogger interviewed advised fellow bloggers when encountering personal grudges, they should resolve it directly with person instead of hoping that the person would stumble upon the blog. The 17-year old had learnt that defaming others would not solve anything.
While blogging may be abused to hurt, it can also serve to save. A local school girl was on the verge of suicide due to tremedous pressure at home and in school chose blogging as a means of an outlet. At the instance when she nearly took her life, it was the caring responses from readers and friends that held her back. She currently seeks help from a counsellor.
Benjamin (myveryownglob.blogspot.com) felt that the bulk of local bloggers are really just ranting about their own lives and he hopes to see more bloggers who discuss social issues. Finally, towards the end of the show, Diana asked Wendy if she felt she was narcissistic. Wendy replied that to a certain extent yes but after all it is her own little space on the web.
I know that quite a few of my friends have missed this episode, so by sharing I hope to give some insight into the world of bloggers.
